Kotka Town Hall Renovation

Open architectural competition, upper class

2023 (1934)

Kotka, Finland

The Kotka Town Hall renovation plan to improve fire safety and update the office spaces.

The renovations to the listed building will be light and make maximum use of existing structures. The renovation and alteration works will be completed in accordance with the original and with as little demolition as possible.

One new staircase will be added inside the building and a lightweight fire escape staircase will be built on the back façade. The colour and material palette of the staircases is inspired by the materials of the original, functionalistic building.

The existing office space will be updated to meet the new needs. The original partition wall structures on the office floors will be preserved wherever this is justified by the use.New interior walls are proposed only for the new conference rooms, along the internal fire escape and on the fourth floor to extend the office corridor to reflect the original design more accurately.
