Urban Encounters

Exhibition Architecture for Finnish National Gallery Ateneum's 130th anniversary exhibition

2018 – 2019

Ateneum, Helsinki, Finland

Collaboration with Iines Karkulahti

The Finnish National Gallery Ateneum's "Urban Encounters" exhibition explored how urbanization shaped the Finnish way of living and its representation in visual art. The exhibition featured around 300 works of art highlighting the changes in everyday life in Finland during the 20th century.

The exhibition architecture focused on the artistic representation of urban environments in different periods. It included elements that encouraged conversations between visitors, and others that offered an immersive experience of engaging with the artworks. These design elements were intended to foster communal dialogue and personal reflection. The exhibition architecture paid particular attention to the relationship between the ambience of the spaces and the artworks on display, the natural transitions between spaces, and the long views that provided a flow of movement through the exhibition.

"Urban Encounters" created an immersive environment that captured the essence of urban life while showcasing the diversity of the Finnish National Gallery's collection.
