Turku's Old Market Square is designed to harmoniously combine historical charm and modern functionality. Located in the heart of Turku, the square is a vibrant gathering place that honors the city's rich cultural heritage while meeting the needs of a modern urban space.
The architectural idea behind the design is to highlight the archaeological layers of the historically significant Turku city center. The paving in the central area of the square closely mimics the contours of medieval streets and buildings found during excavations, making the square not only an interesting but also an educational experience.
The square is paved with flat cobblestones and provides a pedestrian-friendly and accessible environment that encourages peaceful walks and gatherings. Strategically placed benches and seating areas invite people to relax, socialize and enjoy the lively atmosphere.
Throughout the plaza, carefully curated landscapes feature green pockets, plantings and public art installations. These elements bring a touch of nature and creativity to the urban environment and foster a sense of tranquility and excitement for its users.
